Learn about vermicomposting in the classroom.


Louisiana Ag in the Classroom is looking for Louisiana Pre-K-12 teachers from a variety of subject areas to enroll in our free, fall professional development program. The deadline to enroll is September 15.

Participant Requirements:

  • Beginners are welcome! No prior experience is necessary to enroll.

  • Submit the enrollment form.

  • Register for a free Journey 2050 teacher account at https://app.journey2050.com/auth/teacher-signup/.

  • Teachers of Grades 5-12: Teach "Journey 2050 Lesson 1: Sustainability" and "Lesson 2: Soil Nutrients"

  • Teachers of Grades PreK-4: Teach the two above lessons making modifications for your younger students OR select from a variety of Ag in the Classroom lesson plans and activities related to vermicomposting, soil, nutrients, etc. that will be emailed to you when you register.

  • Submit your feedback and evaluation of the course by December 1.

Once enrolled, you will receive:

  • a welcome email with more details and links to the online training.

  • teacher support in implementing hands-on vermicomposting lesson with your students.

In addition, 25 teachers will be selected to receive a free vermicomposting starter kit sponsored by Nutrien LTD and Journey 2050—valued at $100. The kit includes everything you need: a tiered bin, worms, and a variety of additional supplies (turning fork, shovel, soil meter, bedding, non-woven fabrics, collection cup and spigot for harvesting worm tea). Teachers will be notified by September 19 if selected and kits will ship during October.

Certificates for Continuing Learning Units (CLUs) will be provided; however, AITC cannot guarantee that local education agencies or other organizations will accept these CLUs for credit.
